Engines are not the same. Each check below carries an engine tag showing where it's a documented positive signal. Per Google's official AI Optimization Guide, Google's AI features (AI Overviews, Gemini in Search) do not treat llms.txt, schema markup, or content chunking as AI-specific signals. Those checks still matter for Perplexity, Claude, and ChatGPT, but not for Google AI. Crawler-specific checks (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot) only gate the engine they name. What it can't measure: Brand mentions across Wikipedia, Reddit, and industry sites; author credentials and E-E-A-T signals; and your presence on platforms AI models train on (YouTube, LinkedIn, GBP). These require a deeper, multi-source audit. Google explicitly warns that inauthentic mentions are filtered: quality of citation matters more than count.

Why the distinction matters: "GEO" has no certified standard. A strong foundation score means AI can understand your site. It doesn't guarantee AI will cite or recommend you.
